I’ve helped over 100 couples plan and capture their dream Ireland elopement and in this guide I will teach you everything you need to know about eloping to Dunluce Castle.
From costs and permits to logistics and the best time of year to elope — here is how to plan your dream Dunluce Castle elopement along the stunning Causeway Coast.
Hey, I’m Adam!

Ireland Elopement Photographer, videographer and planner.
In the past 5 years I have helped over 100 couples plan and capture their dream Ireland Elopement.
Where Your Ceremony Takes Place at Dunluce Castle
Having captured countless elopements at Dunluce Castle, it’s easy to see why so many couples choose it for their ceremony location. It is truly breathtaking.

Nestled in the heart of the Causeway Coast, the whole area is an incredible place for an intimate destination wedding.
The first thing to know is that wedding ceremonies don’t actually happen inside Dunluce Castle itself. Not only are they not permitted, the castle is very busy, with dozens of tourists present at any given time.
Your intimate wedding ceremony will actually take place on a beautiful neighbouring cliffside.
The clifftop ceremony viewpoint overlooking Dunluce Castle and the Causeway Coast.
This dreamlike spot offers incredible views of :
- Dunluce Castle ruins
- Rugged limestone cliffs
- The beautiful Coastline
- The wild Atlantic Ocean
Over my five years capturing elopements at Dunluce Castle, I have watched so many couples walk out onto the cliffside and say the same thing “I can’t believe this place is real”.
The spot where you will have your ceremony and the surrounding area are all on private land owned by a local farmer.
This is what makes eloping to Dunluce Castle truly unique – your intimate ceremony will be totally private with no tourists present.
After your ceremony, you can take in the incredible cliffside view, wander through the castle ruins and explore some stunning locations along the Causeway Coast.

Dunseverick Castle, just one of the many beautiful nearby locations to explore after your Dunluce Castle ceremony.
Now that you have an overview of what Dunluce Castle ceremonies look like, let’s give you everything you need to know in more detail:
Where Dunluce Castle is Located
Dunluce Castle sits along Northern Ireland’s stunning Causeway Coast — world-famous for its outstanding natural beauty.
The Causeway Coast is packed with dramatic cliffs, beaches and historic ruins — far more than can be explored in a single day. This makes it an incredible destination for your elopement.
After your ceremony at Dunluce Castle, you can spend time exploring stunning locations along the Causeway Coast such as White Rocks Beach, The Giant’s Causeway, Dunseverick Castle and the Dark Hedges.
They are all within a short drive from Dunluce Castle and each other, so you can really maximise your time and experience on your wedding day.

Not only is Dunluce Castle perfectly positioned on the Causeway Coast, it is also within close driving distance from quaint costal towns like Portrush and Portstewart. With plenty of beautiful Air BnB’s and hotels in the area, you will be spoiled for choice in accommodation.
The Causeway Coast area sits just over 1 hour away from Belfast City and under 3 hours from Dublin. Both cities are great to explore and each have major airports you can fly into.
How Your Dunluce Castle Elopement Works
As mentioned earlier, Dunluce Castle ceremonies take place on a stunning private clifftop overlooking the castle and the Causeway Coast.
When you book the ceremony spot you will have 2 hours private access to the site. This is more than enough time for your intimate ceremony, soaking in the cliffside views and getting some stunning photographs and footage.
You can have up to 30 guests attend your Dunluce Castle ceremony. Larger wedding sizes can be accommodated upon special request. The ceremony site is designed to be accessible, making it easy for guests using wheelchairs to fully enjoy the experience.
On your ceremony day you will drive to the Dunluce Castle car park, where you will be greeted by the incredible team at Dunluce Farm Elopements who run the cliffside ceremony site.
They will lead you to a quaint Irish cottage just off the carpark, where you can relax, use the restroom and even share some complimentary Irish whiskey.

When you are ready, you and your guests (if you have any) will be chauffeured the short one minute drive to the cliffside field.
An incredibly fun experience in itself, smaller parties are taken down in a 4×4 truck, with larger weddings using a tractor and bespoke trailer to transport guests.

Depending on how you want your wedding to unfold, you can either travel down together or arrive separately. Arriving separately allows you to save the first look for when one of you ‘walks down the aisle’ (across a lush grass field).
You will be driven down into the field, the ocean waves and Dunluce Castle slowly coming into view as you approach the cliffs. Then the magic happens, you have your intimate ceremony. Immersed in nature, just you and the one you love most.
The great thing about eloping is that you can do it all your own way. Everything you love, none of that you don’t. The same applies to your Dunluce Castle ceremony.
Your ceremony can be:
• Led by a celebrant or religious leader
• Led by a friend or family member
• Just the two of you
Your ceremony can include elements such as:
• Personal vows
• Exchange of rings
• Celtic hand-fasting
• An Irish blessing
After your ceremony you can take time to soak in the mind blowing view, have stunning pictures and footage captured and even book a private picnic on the cliffside.

When you are ready you will be transported back up to the cottage where you can freshen up and get ready to explore inside Dunluce Castle or continue your adventure along the Causeway Coast.
Can You Explore Inside Dunluce Castle?
Yes, you can explore inside Dunluce Castle on your wedding day. Entry is £60 ($80), allowing you to wonder around the beautiful ruins and have stunning photos and footage taken.
Inside Dunluce Castle is not private so the general public will be present but experienced elopement vendors can easily work around the crowds.
The castle grounds close at 5pm, so depending on the season you may need to explore inside the castle before your ceremony.
Images captured of couples as they explored inside Dunluce Castle
Dunluce castle truly is one of the most incredible places you can elope to in all of Ireland. One of the biggest questions couples ask next is how much a Dunluce Castle elopement actually costs.
How Much Does a Dunluce Castle Elopement Cost in 2026–2027?
Compared to traditional weddings where venues alone can cost tens of thousands of dollars, eloping at Dunluce Castle offers a completely different kind of value — one focused on experience rather than expectations.
Below is the cost for booking the private cliffside ceremony location at Dunluce Castle.

- Access to the cottage before and after your ceremony
Everything is designed to keep your day relaxed, un-rushed and completely focused on the two of you.

Overall Cost For a Dunluce Castle Elopement
This cost covers the ceremony location only. Your overall Ireland elopement cost will largely be determined by how much you decide to invest in the experience.
When including flights, accommodation, car hire, vendors and experiences — this is what my previous couples tend to spend when eloping in Ireland.
- $8,000 on a budget.
- $15,000 – $20,000 on high end accommodation, vendors and experiences
- $20,000 + for luxury accommodation and premium honeymoon experiences
Even when working with the best vendors and building a luxurious honeymoon, many of my couples still spent tens of thousands of dollars less than they would have on a wedding at home.

A luxury picnic —just one of many unique activity options you can book for your Dunluce Castle elopement.
The question most couples ask next is whether a ceremony here can be legally recognised — especially if you’re travelling from the United States.
Can US Couples Get Legally Married at Dunluce Castle?
Yes – you can legally get married at Dunluce Castle and have it be recognised in the US and all other countries but there are a few important things to understand first.
Most couples choose one of two main options –
1. Symbolic Ceremony (Most Popular)
Most couples choose to take care of the legal side of their marriage at home, then simply focus on enjoying their ceremony at Dunluce Castle.
This means you can exchange vows on the cliffs without worrying about paperwork, legal wording, or submitting forms.
It also gives you complete freedom to design a ceremony that feels personal and relaxed — allowing you to stay fully present in the moment together.

2. Legally Binding Ceremony (Recognized in the US)
If you’d prefer your ceremony at Dunluce Castle to be legally recognised in the U.S., this is absolutely possible — it just requires a bit more planning in advance.
You’ll need to:
1- Hire a registered officiant to conduct your ceremony.
2- Give notice to the Registrar of Marriages in Northern Ireland at least 28 days in advance.
3- Collect your Marriage Schedule from the Causeway Coast and Glens council office at the near by town of Coleraine.
4 – Return the signed schedule within 3 working days after your wedding.
If you’re travelling from outside the UK/EEA (e.g. US, Canada, Australia) you will also need a Marriage Visitor Visa. I usually recommend starting the legal and Visa process at least 12 weeks in advance to avoid any stress.

Do You Need a Celebrant at Dunluce Castle?
For Legally Recognised Ceremonies:
You’ll need a registered officiant.
I always recommend booking a celebrant experienced in Dunluce Castle elopements early in your planning process. They will guide you through the legal side and make everything feel much more straightforward.
For Symbolic Ceremonies:
You don’t legally need a celebrant. You can exchange vows privately or have a friend or family member lead the ceremony.
That said, having a great celebrant can make your ceremony feel truly special. They help guide the moment, create a natural flow, and take the pressure off so you’re not worrying about what comes next.
What Most Couples Choose
For most couples eloping to Northern Ireland, the simplest approach is to separate the legal paperwork from the ceremony itself.
This allows your time at Dunluce Castle to be focused entirely on the experience — standing on the cliffs, sharing your vows, and fully taking in the moment without any added pressure.
When Is the Best Time of Year to Elope at Dunluce Castle?
There’s no single “best” time to elope at Dunluce Castle. It all depends on the kind of experience you want.
Some couples prioritise long golden evenings, others want moody skies and quieter cliffs. With the right planning, every season offers something incredible.

Let’s start with the key things to know before looking at each season in more detail:
• Best Overall: Mid May – June, mid August – mid October
• Best weather: May – mid September
• Peak season: July
• Quietest months: October – March
• Most dramatic: Winter and early spring
From the beauty of summer to the drama of winter — every season offers something unique when eloping to the Causeway Coast.
Spring (Late March – May)
Fresh coastal air, vibrant colours and fewer visitors compared to summer. Spring is a great option if you’re looking for a quieter, more relaxed experience.
What’s great about eloping in spring is how naturally the day flows. Sunset times sit around 7pm in late March and after 9pm by late May.
This gives you plenty of time to have your Dunluce ceremony, explore the Causeway Coast in soft evening light, and finish with an intimate dinner.
Summer (June – August)
In summer flowers and greenery cover the landscape and the weather is typically at its best. Sunsets stretch to after 10:30pm in June, great for exploring at golden hour long into the evening.
With peak season comes higher accommodation prices, lower availability, and busier locations. The great thing about Dunluce Castle being private means your ceremony itself can remain an intimate experience.
If you’re set on a summer elopement, I recommend planning your ceremony later in the evening on a weekday to avoid the busiest times.

Autumn (September – October)
In Autumn the Causeway Coast takes on a more quaint and atmospheric feel. The light is soft and golden with stunning sunsets.
Similar to spring, sunset times shift from 7:30pm in early September to around 5:00pm by the end of October giving a more natural flow to your ceremony day.
September often feels like a quieter extension of summer, while October brings cooler air, richer tones, and more dramatic skies across the coast.
Winter (November – February)
If you are looking for Ireland at its moodiest, winter elopements at Dunluce Castle are all about a wild atmosphere.
Expect rough seas, dramatic skies, and having the rugged coastline almost entirely to yourselves. It’s perfect for couples who want something more cinematic and unique, and who don’t mind embracing the elements.
With light fading as early as 4pm in December, this means early ceremony times and winter sunsets before dinner. The sunlight stays low all day giving incredible soft light for your ceremony and exploring.

My Recommendation
While every season offers something truly remarkable, if you’re looking for the best balance of conditions, atmosphere and a quieter experience, I usually recommend mid May – June or late August – mid October.
Busy Periods & Key Dates to Be Aware Of
These don’t mean you can’t elope — but they can affect how busy the coast feels, along with travel and accommodation costs.
• North West 200 (annual week long event in early May – (3rd – 8th May 2027)
Major road closures and a big spike in visitors across the coast. Definitely dates to avoid where possible.
• First Two Weeks In July (July 11th–12th are peak)
Busy travel period with parades, traffic delays, and limited accommodation.
• Local Easter holidays
• Local Summer holidays (July – August)
What the Weather Is Like at Dunluce Castle for an Elopement
Siting on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean the ceremony spot at Dunluce Castle can see all four seasons in just a few hours.
You might start the day with soft cloud cover, see it clear into golden light, experience an Irish rain shower and then have an incredible sunset later in the evening.
While that might sound unpredictable, it’s exactly what gives this place its atmosphere. The movement in the sky, the texture of the light, and the energy from the coastline all add to the feeling of being somewhere truly wild and magical.
This is also great for your photos and film. Some of the most beautiful elopements I have captured at Dunluce Castle featured moody skies, fast shifting clouds and rain showers in-between.
How to Plan for the Weather At Dunluce Castle
The key to a great elopement at Dunluce Castle isn’t trying to control the weather — it’s embracing the experience and planning in a way that works with it.
Choosing experienced local vendors makes a huge difference. Knowing how light and rain showers behave along the coast allows us to adjust plans slightly on the day to make the most of the weather you are given.
At Dunluce Castle the two hour slot gives you plenty of time to relax in the cottage until showers quickly pass before starting your ceremony. I also have clear umbrellas which will look great in your photos and film should it rain while you are on the cliffside.

If weather conditions become too extreme your ceremony can take place inside the cottage instead as a backup plan. In my five years capturing elopements at Dunluce Castle I have never had this happen.
The secret advantage to changeable weather is that it very rarely rains heavily for very long. In over 100 elopements at Dunluce Castle and the Causeway Coast I have never had a couple experience constant rain the whole day.
The reality is that you don’t need perfect weather for an incredible elopement. Embrace the adventure, prepare with layered clothing and have experienced vendors. Your elopement will be unforgettable.

When The Wind Can Be a Factor
The wind at Dunluce Castle is often gentle, ranging from completely still to the occasional coastal gust.
While wind will just add movement and drama to your photographs, it can cause considerable problems with the audio for your elopement film.
Without the right setup, wind can interfere with microphones and impact how clearly your vows are recorded. If it blows into the standard mics most wedding videographers use, your ceremony audio will be ruined.
This is when elopement experience becomes important. Even in extreme weather the right wind resistant audio equipment will capture your vows clearly and beautifully.

Tips For Planning Your Ceremony Day at Dunluce Castle
One of the biggest parts of planning your elopement at Dunluce Castle is deciding how your day will actually flow – from when your ceremony takes place to how you make the most of the light, weather, and surrounding locations.
The best place to start is having your ceremony take place Monday-Thursday. Locals flock to the coast at weekends so car parks, adventure spots and restaurants will be busier.
Best Time of Day for Your Ceremony
There are two main things to consider when choosing your ceremony time — the quality of light and having a relaxed, incredibly fun experience.
The ceremony spot at Dunluce Castle can offer beautiful light in the evening, especially on clear days. While it’s possible to plan your ceremony right at sunset, it’s not always the best option for a stress free experience.

Trying to explore the coastline while working towards a fixed sunset time can create unnecessary pressure. On overcast days you may also lose light earlier than expected, leaving less time for photos after your ceremony.
The best structure is to have your ceremony several hours before sunset. The lead up to your ceremony will feel un-rushed and the light will still be soft and golden.
You can still catch that incredible sunset later as you explore the If you’d love a sunset ceremony, it’s absolutely possible — an experienced local photographer/ videographer can adapt to the light as the day unfolds.

While it’s great to have nice lighting, it’s important to remember this day is all about you. With the right vendor your photos and film will be incredible but they don’t need to come at the cost of your experience.
Make Time to Eat Together
One of the most overlooked parts of an elopement day is something incredibly simple. Taking time to eat.
It’s easy to treat it as something to squeeze in between locations, but slowing everything down to share a meal together creates space to pause and actually take it all in.
Whether it’s fresh caught fish and chips, a restaurant, a cliffside picnic or sharing a pizza — your first meal as a married couple can be one of the most meaningful parts of your wedding day.
Create Your Ceremony Day Around You
The best part of eloping at Dunluce Castle isn’t just the ceremony — it’s the experience you can build around it.
No packed schedule, no pressure to perform or family politics. You can build a wedding day full of fun and adventure, with plenty of time and space to soak it all in.
No rushing, no rules, surrounded by nature — a day built around what you love and value most.

This all sounds perfect and you’re probably starting to picture what your own Dunluce Castle elopement could look like — but you may also feel like you don’t know where to start with planning.
Here’s how to actually make it happen.
The 5 Steps to Planning Your Dunluce Castle Elopement
Planning your Dunluce Castle elopement may feel stressful, especially if you are doing it alone from thousands of miles away.
Don’t be overwhelmed. Planning an incredible elopement is actually a very simple process when you have the right person guiding you early on in your journey.
Here’s the simple steps you can follow to make planning your Dunluce Castle elopement feel effortless:
1. Start with Your Photographer or Videographer
This is the secret. The best place to start is by choosing an experienced local elopement photographer or videographer whose work you love.
Unlike traditional weddings, your photographer and videographer aren’t just there to capture your memories — they are there to help you plan and shape an amazing elopement experience.
From the moment you contact them, they will guide you step by step through the planning process, removing any feelings of doubt or anxiety.
They will help you dream up ideas, choose beautiful adventure locations, find great vendors and guide you in the other key decisions along the way.
2. Find Your Date and Book Your Ceremony
Your photographer and videographer will help you find the best time of year to elope, based to the experience you want.
It is best to book your Dunluce Castle ceremony spot through your photographer or videographer to align avalibility but you can book it directly with Dunluce Farm Elopements.
At this point you’ll also decide whether it will be just the two of you or if you’d like to include a small number of guests.
By this stage you will have made all of the key decisions that help in finalising the rest. You won’t believe how simple it felt.

3. Decide Between a Legal or Symbolic Ceremony
Next you decide whether you’d like a legally recognised ceremony or a symbolic ceremony.
As mentioned most couples choose to complete the legal side at home and focus on the experience at Dunluce Castle, but both options are possible depending on your preference.
4. Build Your Elopement Experience
Once the foundations are in place, you can work with your photographer and videographer to start dreaming up ideas for your elopement.
This is where your wedding day becomes truly personal — take your time exploring the Causeway Coast, include meaningful activities, catch a sunset, and finish with a relaxed dinner or reception with your guests.
There is no template. You can build a full day of unforgettable experiences shaped around what you love and value most.

5. Experience the Magic
In the weeks leading up to your elopement your vendors will help confirm timings, logistics, and any additional elements to make sure you have an incredible ceremony day.
Then the day will finally come. You get to experience your dream Dunluce Castle elopement.
Everything is already taken care of. All that’s left to do is soak it all in and experience the magic.
Why Dunluce Castle Is the Best Place to Elope in Ireland
Having captured elopements at many of Ireland’s premier ceremony spots, Dunluce Castle stands above them all.
The historic castle ruins, dramatic cliffs and sound of the wild Atlantic Ocean create a ceremony experience that feels both intimate and adventurous.
But what sets Dunluce Castle apart is the rare combination of powerful scenery, true privacy, and the freedom to explore one of Ireland’s most beautiful coastlines immediately after your ceremony.
Very few locations rival that experience — and fewer still come close.
